Top MLB Player Prop Odds & Picks for Thursday, April 14 (2022)

It’s been an amazing opening week of the 2022 Major League Baseball season. There have been a lot of surprises out of the gate, including a 4-1 start for the Colorado Rockies and the Cleveland Guardians leading the league in scoring. Additionally, there have been great individual efforts like Yu Darvish, Sean Manaea, and Clayton Kershaw, all carrying no-hitters deep into games. But we’re on to the second week of play, so let’s dive into some player props that I’ll be betting today.

Wander Franco O/U 1.5 Total Bases

The A’s are looking to take three out of four games from the Rays today in the series finale as they send Cole Irvin to the mound. The Rays opt for Josh Fleming in this one scheduled for 1:10 ET.

Cole Irvin made his season debut on Saturday in Philadelphia, where he lasted 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk. He moved to 0-1 on the season with a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.

There have been no head-to-head matchups between left-handed Irvin and Wander Franco over their respective careers. But, the hype surrounding the young switch hitter is real. Franco is off to a blazing start in 2022 with a .440 average, the ninth-best in the league. The key statistic here is that Franco has dominated LHP over a six at-bat sample size this season. He’s 5-6 with a double and a triple. The splits hold up over his career as he boasts a .409 batting average with a .682 slugging percentage against lefties. I like Wander Franco to record at least two total bases this afternoon.

Bet: Wander Franco Over 1.5 Total Bases (-110 via DraftKings)

Shohei Ohtani O/U 5.5 Hits Allowed

Next, we’ll head to Texas, where the Angels open up a four-game set with the Rangers. Shohei Ohtani toes the rubber in his second start of the season while Dane Dunning goes for the Rangers. The first pitch in this game is at 8:05 ET from Globe Life Field.

Shohei Ohtani looked great in his season debut despite moving to 0-1 on the year. He limited the Astros to a single earned run over 4.2 innings of work and 80 pitches while striking out nine batters. He allowed just four hits and gave up one free pass.

Ohtani has faced the current Texas roster over 49 at-bats and limited them to a .141 average, allowing just nine hits. This season, the Rangers rank 22nd in the league against right-handed pitching in terms of batting average at just .214. In my opinion, this number of 5.5 hits is a little high, so I’ll be locking in the under on the 5.5 hits allowed by Ohtani.

Bet: Shohei Ohtani Under 5.5 Hits Allowed (-165 via DraftKings)

Walker Buehler O/U 5.5 Strikeouts

The Reds travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers in a four-game series, where they’ll face Cy Young hopeful Walker Buehler in the opening game. In this matchup, Cincinnati counters with Luis Cessa scheduled for a 10:10 ET first pitch.

Walker Buehler made his first start last Friday and threw 78 pitches over 5.0 innings of work. He earned his first win of the season, limiting the Rockies to two earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks. Buehler struck out five batters in the outing.

Buehler has faced this Reds roster over 57 at-bats in his career, and they’ve posted a .208/.224/.267 slash line against him. Out of those 57 at-bats, he’s amassed 19 strikeouts. But the chief statistic for us backing the over on Buehler’s strikeouts tonight is simply how often the Reds have been striking out this season. They have the third-highest overall K% in the MLB at 27.6%, and they’re the leading team in K% against right-handed pitching at 31.1%. Look for Walker Buehler to carve up the Reds in the Dodgers home opener tonight.

Bet: Walker Buehler Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+100 via DraftKings)
