Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

The White Sox have an opportunity to gain some ground on the Twins this weekend as they open up a four-game series in the Twin Cities. Johnny Cueto gets the nod in game one for the Southsiders while the Twins counter with Sonny Gray. First pitch is set for 7:40 p.m. ET in the series opener.

Cueto has certainly exceeded expectations for Chicago this season. The veteran right-hander comes in at just 3-4, but owns a 2.91 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 11 starts. Most recently, Cueto shut down the Tigers over 8.0 innings. He didn’t allow a run and surrendered just five hits while striking out five batters.

Gray has struggled over his last two starts, but he’s putting together a great year overall. The right-hander comes in at 4-2 with a 3.03 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 12 starts. Gray pitched against the Rangers on Friday and allowed five earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks over 4.2 innings.

Despite the recent struggles, Gray has found success against the White Sox. He’s limited Chicago to 14 hits over 71 at-bats (.197), including 1-12 (.833) from Tim Anderson, 3-20 (.150) from Jose Abreu, and 0-6 (.000) Yoan Moncada. He should be able to hold the underperforming Chicago offense scoreless in the first frame. As for Cueto, he just threw against the Twins last Monday and held them to a pair of earned runs over 6.0 innings. It’s worth mentioning that those runs didn’t come until the third time through the order in the 5th inning. Let’s ride with NRFI in Minnesota tonight.
