  • Tampa just won three in a row against the Blue Jays

Monday is the beginning of a very important three-game series between the Tampa Bay Rays (43-36, 18-19 away) and Boston Red Sox (44-35, 20-16 home) at Fenway Park as both teams continue to chase the New York Yankees in the AL East. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 pm ET.

Tampa sends Jalen Beeks to the hill here, while Michael Wacha is supposed to get the ball for the Red Sox. However, he’s reportedly dealing with a heavy arm which means Kutter Crawford could step in.

Tampa Bay vs Boston Probable Pitchers

Beeks who is mostly a reliever for Tampa, will make his fifth start of the year as an opener. He’s actually pitched in this role in three out of his last four outings, but it hasn’t been pretty. The lefty owns a 7.36 ERA during that span. However, Beeks’ most recent appearance was respectable, tossing two innings against the Brew Crew and allowing only one run while striking out four batters. He’s posted a 2.70 ERA overall.

Beeks has yet to face the Red Sox this season, but he’s 3-1 in six career outings, compiling a 5.82 ERA against his former ballclub. Hopefully, the 28-year-old can build off his previous success vs. Milwaukee and give the Rays some longevity here before turning it over to the rest of the pen.

Beeks vs Wacha

1-1 Record 6-1
2.70 ERA 2.69
33.1 Innings Pitched 70.1
41 Strikeouts 50
11 BB 22

As previously mentioned, Wacha could be scratched for Monday’s start due to a minor arm issue. If that does happen, Crawford is the likely replacement. He’s been in Triple-A for just over a week and has a 6.41 ERA in 10 MLB appearances this season.

Crawford’s last start in the big leagues was on June 18th against the Cardinals, surrendering four earned runs in just four innings, also giving up two home runs. He did throw three scoreless frames against Tampa earlier in the campaign, though.

Tampa Is Full of Confidence

The Rays just wrapped up a lengthy five-game series with the Blue Jays and despite losing the first two contests, they won the last three. Tampa’s arms in particular deserve a lot of credit, holding Toronto’s electric offense to just 10 runs in the process.

Shane Baz diced on Sunday, tossing six innings of one-run baseball while collecting seven strikeouts. At the plate, the Rays put up a six spot in the top of the sixth inning, banging out 14 hits on the day. Ji-Man Choi led the way, going 3 for 5 with a bomb.

Red Sox Avoid the Sweep

Boston has lost four of their last six games but managed to salvage a victory on Sunday in the series finale at Wrigley against the Cubs. After dropping the first two games, Connor Seabold gave the Red Sox tons of consistency on the bump, going six innings and allowing a mere one run to Chicago.

Although Boston scored four runs, they did fail to capitalize on numerous opportunities, stranding 14 runners. Rafael Devers (+1000 in NL MVP odds) and Christian Vazquez both had multi-games while Xander Bogaerts exited in the seventh after getting cleated in the thigh. He’s currently day-to-day.

Rays vs Red Sox Pick

This is a tough one because we don’t exactly know who is going to pitch for Boston. Nevertheless, I’m liking Tampa Bay. They just rolled into Toronto and made a statement, pitching well and swinging the bats with authority. It’ll continue at Fenway in the series opener.

Pick: Rays moneyline (+115)
