Panthers’ Betting Odds Shift After Trading for Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield Panthers The Odds Background

  • The Carolina Panthers’ futures odds improved after acquiring QB Baker Mayfield.
  • The Panthers’ Super Bowl odds moved from +12500 to +10000 at Caesars Sportsbook.
  • Carolina surrendered a conditional 2024 pick to acquire Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers saw their various futures odds move after acquiring quarterback Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

While the odds shift wasn’t significant enough to move the needle, Mayfield’s arrival in Carolina has made an immediate positive impact on the team.

Panthers’ Odds Shift

At Caesars Sportsbook, Carolina’s Super Bowl Odds went down from +12500 to +10000 while their NFC Conference Odds improved from +6000 to +5000. The Panthers also moved from +1200 to +1100 to win the NFC South, and are now a +400 to make the playoffs after opening at +500. According to Caesars, the only number that has not changed after the Mayfield trade is the Panthers’ win total which still stands at 6.5 victories.

BetMGM also reported that Carolina’s Super Bowl LVII odds went down from +15000 to +12500 while their Division odds improved from +1200 to +1000. However, the said online sportsbook said that the Panthers’ Conference odds stayed at +6600. BetOnline, Unibet, and FOX Bet also have Carolina pegged at +12500 odds to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

At the FanDuel Sportsbook, the Panthers’ Super Bowl odds also got better, but still a longshot at 100/1 from 130/1. They are also listed at +10000 via PointsBet USA. The Panthers’ shortest odds right now are at Bet365 USA where they stand at +6700. But then again, they still have the 8th longest odds among all NFL teams.

Panthers Give Up Conditional 2024 Pick for Mayfield

The Panthers gave up a conditional 2024 draft pick and will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield’s salary with the Browns paying $10.5 million of it. Mayfield agreed to convert the remainder of his salary to incentives so that the deal could be consummated. According to sources, he can earn back that money based on the team’s performance. That is easier said than done, however.

Carolina is coming off a season where it won just 5 games for the third straight season. The Panthers have not made the playoffs since losing to the New Orleans Saints in the 2017 wild card round. Carolina still has last season’s starter Sam Darnold who has selected two picks after Mayfield in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Panthers also drafted Matt Corral in the third round of this year’s draft.

According to sources, Mayfield will have to earn the QB1 job during training camp. However, the best NFL betting sites have listed Mayfield as the heavy -1200 betting favorite to be the Panthers’ starter, with Darnold listed at +500 and Corral at +5000 odds.  If he does win the starting job as the oddsmakers are predicting, his first assignment as the Panthers’ QB will be against his former team, the Browns. Carolina opened as a 1-point spread and +105 Moneyline underdogs against Cleveland.
