- The Dallas Mavericks are through to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
- Dallas is however a sizable +240 underdog against the Phoenix Suns in the next round.
- The Suns have opened as -5.5 point favorites in Game 1 on Monday in Phoenix.
By beating the Utah Jazz in their first-round playoffs series, the Dallas Mavericks are advancing to the second round for the first time since their championship season in 2011. It also marked the first time that Luka Doncic has gone past the opening round of the playoffs.
But the Mavs’ celebration could be short-lived as they now have the unenviable task of facing the best regular-season team in the NBA in the second round of the playoffs in the Phoenix Suns.
As far as the Mavs Go?

According to the online sportsbook BetOnline, the Mavericks are +240 betting underdogs against the Phoenix Suns in their second-round playoff series. Phoenix, the top seed in the entire playoffs, and the current co-favorites to win the 2022 NBA title are listed as a sizable -285 favorite to eliminate the Mavs.
Phoenix is +310 to win the series in five games while the odds of Dallas losing in seven games are listed at +350. The Suns winning 4-2 is next at +410 while Phoenix sweeping Dallas is currently pegged at +575. The shortest odds of Dallas winning the matchup is at +650 for a 4-2 series win. The Mavs winning in Game 7 is priced at +800 while Mark Cuban’s boys are a +1400 to win in five games. Dallas via sweep has the longest odds at +2500.
As far as how many games the series will have, the same online betting site has 7 as the favorite at +200, followed by six games at +215 and five games at +250. The odds of either team sweeping the series are listed at +500 so although the sportsbooks are picking the Mavs to lose to the Suns, they are predicting that Dallas won’t be a walk in the park for Phoenix.
Suns, Mavs Set for Intense Series
https://t.co/Pqxh2EPubW – Series preview: Fully-stocked Suns, Mavs seem set for intense series
— NBA (@NBA) April 30, 2022
With Devin Booker returning and looking sharp in Game 6 of the Suns’ first-round series against the New Orleans Pelicans, Phoenix isn’t missing anyone due to injury. The same is true with the Mavericks who after starting their previous series against the Utah Jazz without Luka Doncic, are at full strength entering Game 1. With both teams healthy, experts are predicting an intense series.
Phoenix has dominated Dallas in the last three seasons, winning their last nine head-to-head meetings. But although the Suns swept their 2021-22 season series, their averaging winning margin in three head-to-head games was just 7.66 points per game. But all those losses came before the end of January 2022 when the Mavs were still struggling to climb the standings. Dallas closed out the regular season by winning 16 of their last 21 games. They also went 4-1 SU against the Jazz in the opening round of the playoffs.
The Suns have opened as a -5.5 point spread and -220 betting favorites to win Game 1 which is scheduled for Monday at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. The last time that the Mavs won in Phoenix was way back in November 2019. But with Doncic 100% healthy and Jalen Brunson having a breakout postseason, don’t count out the Mavs yet.
