- LeBron James currently has the 10th best odds to win the 2023 NBA MVP award at +2500.
- That’s the longest opening MVP odds for James since the 2004-05 season when tracking of MVP odds began.
- James’ Lakers, however, have moved up from +2500 in the opening title odds boards to +1000 with oddsmakers expecting them to land Kyrie Irving in a trade.
There was once a time when LeBron James was the best and most dominant player in the NBA, That’s why he’s known as the King. 20 NBA season later, that time has passed.
After opening with +1400 odds to win the 2022 NBA MVP award last season, James is a current +2500 to win the Maurice Podoloff trophy this coming season. It’s James’ longest MVP odds since the 2006-07 season when Sportsoddshistory.com began tracking MVP odds.

According to the BetOnline App, King James is a +2500 to win the 2023 NBA MVP award. That’s still the 10th shortest odds to win the award at the said online sportsbook but when you are LeBron James, those are no longer kingly numbers.
James has spent most of his career being the odds-on favorite to win the award. For 13 consecutive seasons beginning in 2006 and ending in 2019, King James was either the betting favorite or second favorite on the opening MVP betting boards. During the four seasons he won the award ( 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013), Bron was the preseason favorite to win the award.
LeBron is coming off a season where he played in only 56 games due to injury and rest. But when he was available to play, he was the most valuable player for the Los Angeles Lakers. James averaged 30.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game but his individual brilliance wasn’t enough to get the Lakers to the playoffs as L.A. finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 33-49 record.

The Lakers opened with a +2500 odds to win the 2023 NBA title. Those odds were sliced down to +2200 after the early betting results and have changed drastically since being named as the betting favorites to land Kyrie Irving in a trade. The Irving trade is still wishful thinking for Lakers fans but the best NBA betting sites have shortened the Lakers’ 2023 title odds to +1000.
An Irving trade would make the Lakers look better, at least on paper but if it does not happen, Los Angeles will have to gut it out with Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, and LeBron James. Make no mistake, there is plenty of All-Star power in that trio. But as we saw last season, the three don’t have the right chemistry to make things work for the Lakers.
Los Angeles’ 2023 opening championship odds of +2500 was the longest by any team that LeBron has played for since the 2004-05 NBA season when the Cleveland Cavaliers opened at +4000 odds. The longest odds ever for an LBJ-led team was +7500 during his rookie season.
