The Pittsburgh Steelers have never had a quarterback dilemma since 2004 which was Ben Roethlisberger’s first season with the team. But now that Big Ben has retired, the big question in Pittsburgh is who will be the Steelers starter.
The depth charts say it’s Mitchell Trubisky but after the Steelers were the first team to pick a QB at last week’s draft, Kenny Pickett has entered the picture. If the oddsmakers are correct, Rookie Kenny Pickett could end up starting more games at quarterback for the Steelers than Mitch Trubisky.
According to the online sportsbook BetOnline, Pickett is the -200 favorite to start more games than Trubisky (+150) this season.
Mike Tomlin Says Pickett Has a Chance
“He certainly has a chance.”
— NFL Network (@nflnetwork) April 30, 2022
The Steelers made Pickett the first quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, selecting the former Pitt star with the 20th overall pick of the Draft. Head coach Mike Tomlin said after the draft that they did not expect Pickett to be on the board when they picked. But when he was, they grabbed the opportunity to pick the quarterback who was considered the most NFL-ready in a weak QB class.
Tomlin was also asked about who their starter would be in Week 1 and he said that Pickett will compete with Trubisky and Rudolph for that QB1 job. Although Trubisky and Rudolph have the advantage over him, Pickett is no stranger to the Steelers’ practice facility as the Panthers use the same venue for their practices.
Last season, Pickett threw for 4,319 passing yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Pickett completed 67.2% of his passes and was named as one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He finished third in the voting behind Bryce Young and Aidan Hutchinson with 28 first-place votes and 631 total points.

Before the 2022 NFL Draft, it was a near-lock that Mitch Trubisky would be the Steelers’ QB1 this season after signing the former Chicago Bears to a two-year deal. Trubisky spent his four NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears who drafted him second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Last season, Trubisky played as back-up to Josh Allen in Buffalo
During his tenure with the Bears, Trubisky started 50 of 51 games while completing 1010 of 1,577 passes for 10,609 passing yards with 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. He had a passer rating of 87.2 and also rushed for 1,057 yards with 8 rushing touchdowns on 190 carries. He was the fastest Bears QB to reach the 10,000 passing yards mark, doing so in just 49 games or nine games faster than the legend.
Trubisky is only 27 years old so there’s plenty of football ahead of him. He also has the right amount of experience and has been to the postseason three times. No question, Trubisky is an upgrade from Mason Rudolph. But now that Pickett is there too, he will have to earn his starting job.
