Newly minted undisputed 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo has opened as the betting favorite in a possible title defense against Australian Tim Tszyu.

According to the best boxing sportsbooks, Charlo is the -330 favorite to retain his belts with Tszyu coming back as the +235 bottom dog. Betting odds for the fight opened after reports that the two fighters have agreed to fight each other next.

Jermell vs Tszyu Agreed for 154-lb Fight

According to WBO lead legal counsel, Gustavo Oliveira confirmed to Boxingscene.com on Monday that, Jermell and Tszyu have reached an agreement for their 154-pound title fight. The bout was ordered by the WBO last May 30 with both parties given 20 days to negotiate or else the fight would be subjected to a purse bid.

Charlo is coming off a 10th-round knockout win over Brian Castano last month to become the sport’s first 154-pound undisputed champion. Ten months earlier, Charlo and Castano fought to a 10-round split draw in their first attempt at unifying the division’s four major belts and the Ring light middleweight title. The 10th best pound-for-pound fighter in The Ring’s rankings is 35-1 with 19 knockouts. Jermell’s only defeat came against Tony Harrison in December 2018 in a fight where he was listed as the -1100 betting favorite.

Against Tszyu, Charlo will be the betting favorite for the 38th consecutive bout. Jermell has never opened nor closed with the plus money sign written next to his name. At -330, this marks Charlo’s shortest opening odds since he hit the opening betting boards at +5000 against Jorge Cota in June 2019. In his most recent bout, Jermell opened at -125 odds and closed at a price of -235.

Tim Tszyu beats Terrell Gausha via UD

Meanwhile, Tszyu has been the WBO’s mandatory challenger when Castano was still champion. The 27-year-old son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu is a former Australian light-middleweight champion and the current WBO Asia-Pacific and WBO Global light-middleweight champion. Undefeated in 21 bouts with 15 stoppage wins, Tszyu is coming off a win over former world title challenger Terrell Gausha.

The win over Gausha came one week after the two were supposed to co-headling the Charlo vs Castano rematch which was originally scheduled in March. Castano suffered a biceps muscle tear that forced him out of the March 19 date. Tszyu offered to step in and fight Charlo but promoters eventually decided to push back the undisputed title bout and give Tszyu a headliner billing one week later.

Tszyu has been a betting favorite of at least -1000 in eight total bouts but will see the plus money sign written next to his name for the first time in his pro boxing career if this fight gets booked. The Australian has never opened at odds longer than the -227 he was pegged at when he fought former WBO welterweight champion, Jeff Horn.
