Sakai and Spivak are scheduled to meet at UFC Vegas 59 on August 6th at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, in an event that will be headlined by light heavyweights Thiago Santos and Jamahal Hill.

Tai Tuivasa Knocks Out Augusto Sakai

Sakai is coming off a second-round knockout loss to Tai Tuivasa at UFC 269 last December 11th That defeat was the third in a row for the Brazilian who began his UFC career with four consecutive wins after getting signed by the UFC from the Contender Series.

The 31-year-old from Curitiba, Brazil is currently the 14th-ranked heavyweight contender in the UFC. After spending his early career in his native country, Sakai joined Bellator MMA and posted a 4-1-1 record in six appearances, with his only promotional loss coming at the hands of veteran Cheick Kongo. Sakai joined the first installment of the UFC’s Contender Series Brazil show and earned a 2nd round TKO win which earned him a UFC contract. Overall, Sakai has a record of 15-4 with 11 wins by knockout.

This will only be the third time in his MMA career that Sakai has opened with the plus money sign written next to his name although he has closed as the betting underdog in four total bouts. All of his four losses have come in bouts where he entered the fight at plus money odds.

Spivak Takes Out Greg Hardy

Spivak took out former NFL player Greg Hardy in just two minutes to open up the UFC 272 main card last March 5th. The win was Spivak’s fourth in his last five bouts and enabled him to bounce back from a first-round knockout loss to Tom Aspinall at UFC Vegas 36 last September 4, 2021.

The 27-year-old from Chisinau, Moldova has been fighting since 2014 and has appeared for notable promotions like World Warriors Fighting Championships, Eagles Fighting Championship, N1 Pro Nomad MMA, and Real Fight Promotion before joining the UFC in 2019 after making two successful defenses of the WWFC heavyweight title. He dropped two out of his first three UFC assignments before his current 4-1 run. Overall, Spivak is 14-3 with six knockouts and six submission victories.

The Moldovan Polar Bear has been the betting favorite in four out of eight UFC assignments and has lost once with the minus money sign written next to his name on the betting boards. That happened when he opened at -115 and closed at -135 odds when he dropped a unanimous decision to Marcin Tybura in February 2020.
