As we head into the final round at Brookline, there was some movement on the leaderboard. The weather proved challenging for some of the top competitors as Round 3 took some out of the running, while others were able to push themself into contention. It’ll be an exciting final round with many players within the mix. With the weather being the same for Sunday, anything could happen.
Jon Rahm over Scottie Scheffler (-168)
Jon Rahm followed up his incredible 67 on Friday with a rough 71 on Saturday. He could have headed into the last round with a lead, but the 18th was a disaster as he hit the sand coming off the tee, completely whiffed on his first shot, the second landed in another trap, then he would shoot it onto the green for a two-putt double bogey and is now a shot behind. He has to get that last shot out of his head because he still has a chance to win on Sunday.
Scottie Scheffler also shot well in the front nine with a 32, but he would double-bogey 11, then bogey 12-15 to end the day shooting 71. He played well, hitting 64% of his fairways, and had +2.10 strokes gained from putting.
Rahm has proven he can bring his best on Sundays, especially in majors. At the Masters he shot a 77 in Round 3 and came back strong with a 69, then at the PGA Championship, he shot a 76 and finished with a 68. Scheffler has been the opposite as he’s 27th with an average of 69.14, his worst round performance this year.
Rory Mcllroy over Scottie Scheffler (+140)
Mcllroy had an incredible first day, but he ended up with a rough Saturday as he shot 73 and is now three strokes off the lead. Round 3 has not been kind to him all year as he’s 47th with 69.89 in that round.
After the round, he had an optimistic mindset, saying he’s “excited to be in the mix” and is “playing as good a golf as I’ve played in a long time.” The final round has proven to be where he excels as he shoots a 68.00, his lowest of any round.
