Welcome to my bracket advice series, where I will be writing an article covering the perfect bracket for small pools, medium pools, and large pools. Here is my advice for filling out a medium pool. To clarify, I see a medium pool as any pool with fewer than 100-1000 people. Here are my three main tips for small pool bracket filling with an example bracket in the end. Feel free to copy-paste if you want.

Be Contrarian, But Not Too Risky
There are plenty of ways to be different when filling out your bracket but not get too crazy. Tennessee is an example of a strong 3-seed that can make it out of the South Region over Arizona and Villanova. The Volunteers are red-hot and their defense can handle any squad. They have already beat Arizona and have proven they can play on a neutral court after running through the SEC tournament.
Let it Loose with First-Round Upsets
This may be a crazy year. There are 13 games with spreads within five points so don’t be surprised by any upsets. Based on who you’ve heard, you may expect some underdogs popular but it’s almost always the higher seed as the popular pick. South Dakota State is the first go-to for an upset choice that would be the most contrarian out of the close spread options. My next choices are Virginia Tech and Davidson.
Do Your Research
This may be an obvious choice but with the small pools, you can keep it straightforward. For these bigger pools, you have to read up – there are plenty of options here on BettingPros for you to do just that. There are plenty of trends and statistics that promote certain teams. Personally, I value recent play (the last ten games), 3pt shooting, and coaching.
